Super Secret Cleaning Hack: Removing Carpet Stains with Clear Alcohol

There are few sounds more alarming in a living room than the sound of a full glass of red wine tipping over. You know the moment. Someone bumps the coffee table. The glass begins to wobble. Everyone suddenly develops superhuman reflexes, but not quite superhuman enough. And then…

Red wine. Meet beige carpet.

At Oakville Maids, we spend a lot of time cleaning up the little accidents that happen when people actually live in their homes. And fortunately, a carpet stain doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time to rearrange the furniture and strategically place an ottoman over the evidence. We have a cleaning trick for this one we learned years ago from a carpet cleaning professional and it sounds a little backwards: Fight alcohol with alcohol. Yes, really. But this could apply to any stain, not just red wine…

The Crime Scene: Red Wine on the Carpet

So, a perfectly innocent evening involving a glass of wine turns into the sort of situation that makes homeowners stare silently at the carpet while mentally calculating replacement costs. The first rule? Don’t panic. The second rule? Don’t start attacking the carpet like it personally offended you.

When people see a stain, their natural reaction is often to grab a towel and scrub furiously. Unfortunately, aggressive rubbing can push the stain farther into the carpet fibres and spread it around. Instead, blot.

Your carpet will appreciate the gentler relationship.

The “Super Secret” Cleaning Tip

Here comes the fun part. One way to tackle a stain is with clear alcohol, such as vodka. We realize this sounds less like a cleaning tip and more like the beginning of a very strange cocktail recipe. But there is some logic behind it. The alcohol can help loosen and dissolve components of the stain, making it easier to transfer from the carpet fibres into a clean cloth. In other words… Wine caused the problem. Vodka gets called in to negotiate.

How to Do It

Start by blotting up as much of the spill as possible with a clean white cloth or paper towel. Don’t rub. Blot from the outside of the stain toward the centre so you aren’t accidentally turning one small wine stain into a much larger piece of abstract carpet art. Next, apply a small amount of clear alcohol, such as vodka, to the stained area. Then continue blotting with a clean cloth. As you work, you should begin seeing the stain transfer from the carpet onto the cloth. Use a fresh section of the cloth as it picks up the stain rather than continually pressing the same dirty portion back into the carpet. Repeat as necessary.

Simple.

And considerably cheaper than replacing the carpet.

Before You Raid the Liquor Cabinet…

There is one important caveat. Carpets are made from different fibres and use different dyes, so never assume that something safe on one carpet will be safe on another. Before applying alcohol, or any cleaning product, to a visible area, test a tiny amount in an inconspicuous location first.

Give it a moment and make sure you don’t see:

  • colour bleeding
  • fading
  • fibre damage
  • any other unpleasant surprises

Also check the carpet manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations whenever possible.

A cleaning trick isn’t much of a trick if it removes the stain and the carpet colour along with it.

Blot. Don’t Scrub.

If you remember only one thing from this article, aside from perhaps questioning why our cleaning advice involves vodka, remember this: Blot stains. Don’t aggressively scrub them. Scrubbing can spread the mess, damage fibres and drive liquid farther into the carpet. Instead, press a clean absorbent cloth firmly against the area, lift it away, move to a clean section of the cloth and repeat. It’s not exciting. It won’t make an action movie. But it works considerably better than declaring war on your carpet with a dish towel.

And If the Stain Wins?

Sometimes home remedies work beautifully. Sometimes a stain has been sitting there for three months, has survived two birthday parties, a dog, several mysterious cleaning products and something your spouse found underneath the kitchen sink. At that point, professional help may be the better option. The sooner you deal with a stain, the better your odds tend to be.

And please don’t start combining random cleaning chemicals hoping one of them will win. Certain household cleaners should never be mixed, and experimentation belongs in chemistry labs, not on the family-room carpet.

From Oakville Maids: You’re Welcome

So there you have it. Our super-secret carpet cleaning tip: If alcohol or any stain attacks your carpet, sometimes alcohol can help fight back. Blot the spill, use a little clear alcohol where appropriate, keep blotting, and give the stain a chance to surrender. And if you’d rather not spend your free time crawling around on the carpet negotiating with a Cabernet stain, that’s understandable too.

That’s why companies like Oakville Maids exist. We clean homes throughout Oakville and the surrounding area so you can spend less time worrying about stains, dust, bathrooms and floors, and more time enjoying the house you’re working so hard to keep clean. Preferably with your wine safely on the table.

P.S. This article is based on a video we made years ago, back when our cameras were older, our editing was questionable, and apparently we thought spilling wine on carpet was a perfectly reasonable way to teach cleaning tips. The advice still holds up, though.
