When I bought our office in 2013, I had this overwhelming feeling that I had finally “made it.” After all, I was no longer renting some tiny little office for our house cleaning service. I was buying an actual building. Now, to appreciate why this felt like such a big deal, you need to understand where we came from.

Our very first office cost us $250 a month. It was technically advertised as an “office,” but I’m fairly certain its original purpose was storing mops and sadness. Frankly, it may have started life as a janitorial supply closet. Which, for a maid service, felt oddly on-brand.

It was tiny. Like “if two people stood up at the same time, someone was getting elbowed” tiny. So eventually we upgraded… to a condominium.

Now, that might sound unconventional for a house cleaning company in Burlington, but it actually worked brilliantly. First, it had something magical our old office lacked: space. It even had a washer and dryer, which, for a maid service, felt like luxury living. Second, I wasn’t throwing money into the black hole known as rent anymore. I was building equity. Years later, that condo is fully remodeled, paid off, and rented out today, so it ended up being a great investment. And third (this was the sneaky-smart par), it was located right in the center of where we were getting most of our customers. Proximity mattered heavily for local Google rankings, so having our office there helped us show up better when people searched for house cleaning services.

So yes, it was unconventional. But it worked perfectly. And I can’t even claim credit for the idea.

The inspiration came after meeting the owner of a multi-million dollar commercial cleaning company who had bought an entire house for his business. Operations worked downstairs, sales upstairs. The more I thought about it, the more genius it seemed. Not only did he have office space, but every mortgage payment was quietly building wealth instead of disappearing into rent forever.

That stuck with me. So, by the early 2010s, though, we had grown quite a bit. Teams of cleaners were arriving every morning, cars coming and going, supplies moving around… and let’s just say the HOA was becoming increasingly “aware” of our existence.

That was my cue. It was time to buy a real office building.

And I remember the moment I first walked into it. The seller had been a builder, and the place was solid, beautiful, and incredibly well maintained. I immediately thought:

“This is it. This is our new home.”

My real estate agent quickly whispered that I should maybe contain my excitement a little so the seller’s agent wouldn’t gain leverage during negotiations. Apparently blurting out “I LOVE THIS PLACE” is frowned upon in commercial real estate. Who knew? But I think the building was meant to be ours.

Later, I learned the seller saw a younger version of himself in me; a young entrepreneur trying to build something from scratch, just like he once had. I don’t think either of us was overly focused on squeezing every last dollar out of the deal. It just felt right.

The negotiations were smooth, we closed on the building, moved in, and we’ve been here ever since. And the best thing… today, the office is fully paid off. And I’m not going to lie, that feels pretty incredible.

Back in 2023, we made the final payment, and suddenly there was no rent, no mortgage, no landlord. Just ours. That changes a business. The money that would have gone toward rent can now go back into the company, especially into paying our amazing staff a wage they can comfortably live on. That’s helped us create one of the lowest turnover rates in the industry.

And in house cleaning, that matters. Customers don’t want a revolving door of strangers in their home. They want familiar faces. Trusted people. The same cleaners year after year. And frankly, our employees deserve stability too. So owning this building didn’t just help the business financially, it helped us build a better company culture. Anyway, enough of me getting sentimental about commercial real estate.

This is our office, and we’re proud of it. More importantly, we’re proud to serve Burlington and provide the best house cleaning service we possibly can for local families. So thank you, Burlington, for giving us the opportunity to serve yours.
