Sometimes, making a difference starts with a remarkably simple question:

“How can I help?”

That question, asked by a member of our Oakville Maids family, ultimately helped set in motion a relief effort stretching from Oakville and Dallas all the way to communities affected by the devastating earthquake in Venezuela. And it all began with Karen.

An Oakville Maids Team Member Reaches Out

In the days following the earthquake, Valentina was watching communities in Venezuela struggle to respond to enormous needs. Local residents, medical professionals, shelters, and volunteers were gathering food, hygiene products, baby supplies, and other necessities for people in the affected areas. Valentina had already personally contributed two batches of supplies and was using her WhatsApp status to share information about collection centers and ways people could help. Then she received a message from Karen, a member of our Oakville Maids team.

Karen asked Valentina if she had a PayPal account or another way she could send money to help people affected by the earthquake. What makes the gesture even more touching is that Karen was about two weeks away from giving birth at the time. She certainly had plenty happening in her own life. Yet she was thinking about families thousands of kilometres away who suddenly found themselves needing help.

At first, Valentina hesitated.

Accepting someone else’s money meant taking responsibility for making sure it was converted into meaningful assistance and actually reached people who needed it. But Valentina also realized that she didn’t want to stand in the way of someone who genuinely wanted to help.

Karen’s question planted a seed. And that seed grew.

From One Person to an Entire Team

The idea eventually reached Angela and the team at our parent company, Dallas Maids, where employees were invited to contribute if they wished. The response was wonderful.

Over aproximately two weeks, the Dallas Maids cleaning teams contributed what they could, gradually filling a donation box. By the time the box was opened, the ladies had raised $265. There was no corporate fundraising campaign behind it. Nobody was required to participate. It was simply a group of people seeing others in need and deciding to do something about it.

The money was transferred through Valentina’s family so that it could be converted locally and used to purchase supplies in Venezuela. Then Valentina went to work making every dollar count.

Turning Donations Into Real Help

Valentina spent her free time comparing prices so she could stretch the team’s contributions as far as possible. She also kept everyone updated along the way, sharing photographs and an accounting of what was purchased so the people who donated could see the impact of their generosity. And that impact became very real. The contributions helped purchase baby formula, diapers, baby food, juice, cookies, hygiene products, toilet paper, food staples, and other everyday necessities. Some supplies were destined for families in the affected areas. Others were being provided to shelters that had taken in people displaced by the disaster. In an update to the team, Valentina explained what their generosity meant:

“Thanks to you and your generosity, there will be babies who have their formula and diapers, children who have food, and families who have hygiene products.”

Suddenly, a collection that began with one message wasn’t simply about dollars anymore. It meant a baby having formula. A parent having diapers. A family having soap and basic hygiene supplies. A shelter having additional food to prepare meals. Those are the moments when a donation becomes something much more tangible.

Doubles the Contribution

When Greg Shepard, CEO of Oakville Maids, heard what the team had accomplished, he decided to match the $265 raised by the employees, bringing the total contribution to $530.

The additional funds mean even more supplies can make their way to people who need them. But as wonderful as the company match is, the most meaningful part of this story happened before any company money was added. It all happened when one employee simply decided she wanted to help.

From Oakville to Venezuela

The purchased supplies have been coordinated with people on the ground in Venezuela, including medical professionals who have been collecting and distributing relief donations. Some of the hygiene products are being included in relief packages destined for affected communities in and around La Guaira. Food products are also being directed to local shelters that have taken in people from the affected areas.

Valentina has continued documenting the process and sharing updates with the employees who contributed so they can follow their donations from the collection box all the way to the people receiving the assistance. That transparency matters. The people who gave aren’t simply hearing that their money “went to charity.” They can actually see the formula. They can see the diapers. They can see the food. And ultimately, they can see the people their generosity is helping.

This Is the Kind of Culture We’re Proud Of

At Oakville Maids, we talk a lot about taking care of people. Usually, that means taking care of our customers, supporting our cleaning professionals, or helping someone come home to a cleaner and more comfortable house. But caring for people doesn’t necessarily stop at a customer’s front door. Sometimes it reaches much farther. In this case, it reached thousands of kilometres away.

What makes this story particularly special to us is that it began with someone from Oakville Maids simply asking if she could help. Karen didn’t organize a fundraiser. She didn’t know her question would eventually inspire a larger effort. She just saw people suffering and wanted to do something. And Valentina found a way to turn that generosity into real assistance. Angela helped bring her team together. They filled a donation box. And many small acts of kindness became one much larger one.

One Question Can Make a Difference

Businesses often talk about company culture. But culture isn’t really something written in an employee handbook or displayed on a wall. You see it in what people choose to do when nobody is telling them what to do. Someone sees people struggling and asks:

“Can I help?”

Someone else says:

“Yes. Here’s how.”

Then another person joins.

And another.

That’s how a message from an Oakville Maids employee ultimately helped put food, diapers, formula, and essential supplies into the hands of people facing an extraordinarily difficult situation in Venezuela. To Karen, Valentina, Angela, and everyone who played a part:
