Oakville apparently likes us. Really likes us.

Oakville Maids was recently voted a 2026 Reader Favourite by Oakville News, and we couldn’t be more grateful. Awards are always nice, of course. They look good on the website, give us something to brag about, and make us feel slightly more important than we probably are. But this one means a little more because it came from the people of Oakville. Our customers voted for us, and that makes it pretty special.

Our goal at Oakville Maids is simple: build a cleaning company people could trust, provide consistently great service, and create the kind of company customers would feel comfortable recommending to their friends and family. Apparently, we’re doing something right. So, a big THANK YOU goes to everyone who took the time to vote for us. We know people are busy, and voting for your cleaning company probably wasn’t the most exciting thing on your schedule that day, so we genuinely appreciate it.

Of course, none of this happens without our team. Our cleaners are the ones doing the hard work every day, scrubbing kitchens, cleaning bathrooms, fighting with shower doors that seem determined to remain cloudy forever, and generally making homes look much better than they did when we arrived. Our office team also deserves a lot of credit. They handle the scheduling, customer questions, last-minute changes, quality control, and all the little things behind the scenes that customers never see. Welcome back to Oakville Maids! Today, we’re doing a back-to-school cleaning checklist to get your home ready before the rush.

School starts very soon in Oakville and this means there’s no time to waste! Before you notice, you’ll have to get ready for school shopping, fitting uniforms and getting back into the school routine.

Part of getting back to that routine is planning out and cleaning the spaces where your kids will do their homework, think of the areas where they need to focus (and your workspace as well if you work from home) and an area for leisure or hanging out and spending quality time with your family.

At Oakville Maids we know how helpful it is to help families prepare their homes for back-to-school season. An organized space makes a huge difference in how kids actually settle into their routines.

Why Timing Matters for Back-to-School Cleaning

Most families wait until the week before school starts. And we’re already at that point! But don’t worry, even though the schedule will be a bit tighter than normal, you still have enough time to get your home ready even with 30 – 45 minutes of cleaning a day.

Summer leave behind specific messes, too. For example, you may have noticed more dust settles on your floors and countertops if you’ve kept windows open all day. Pet hair, outdoor sand and dirt get accumulates faster.

And that’s okay, that’s what happens when kids are home, doors are open, and nobody’s worried about a spotless kitchen at 4 PM on a Tuesday. It’s a sign of a well-lived home.

As long as you stay consistent and you organize and clean at least one area of your home before or after your work day, you’ll be okay.

You don’t necessarily have to clean one area per day. Depending on your routine, you can either clean by room (e.g. your kitchen today, the master bedroom tomorrow…) or by category (e.g. tidying up and organizing all closets today, vacuuming or mopping the floors of all rooms tomorrow). If you do this for 4 – 5 days straight, you can notice things you’d normally miss and clean properly instead of just running around.

Our method includes cleaning by area but feel free to adapt this to your needs. First, we’re tackling the bedrooms. Next, the workspaces and kitchen / dining. Then, the bathrooms and common living spaces and last but not least, the windows and the basement.

The Bedrooms: Start Here

Kids’ bedrooms need the most attention before school starts, and this is where we usually recommend beginning for this time of the year. Besides, if you run out of time to clean the other areas, you can still clean them at any point during the month.

Start with the closets. Pull everything out and analyze what needs to go, what can be donated, what needs to be stored (e.g. light summer clothes) and what can stay.

Depending on their age, you can include your kids into the project and ask them to declutter and tidy up their clothing and other items they have. You can ask them to sort into three boxes: donate, store, keep, and recycle.

Don’t put anything back into the closets yet. We’ll leave that to the end.

Wash the closet shelves down with a damp microfiber cloth and a tiny bit of all-purpose cleaner. With closets, it’s important to use the right amount of water. If you notice it’s slightly dusty or greasy, add one or two drops of dish soap.

Once that’s done, wipe down the clothes rods and vacuum the floor inside the closet. This can be a bit tedious but it won’t take longer than 10 minutes per closet and it’s important to do it at least 2 times a year.

For the bedroom itself, vacuum under and around the bed. Use an upholstery vacuum to vacuum the mattress or, even better, a mattress vacuum. It’s important to remove dust mites and dead skin cells, especially if you haven’t cleaned it since summer started.

For the nightstands, wipe them down including the inner side of drawers and the back legs.

There are a few small areas where you should focus if you want top-notch results: light switches, door handles, light fixtures, and ceiling fans. Your kids touch light switches and door handles daily, and ceiling fans and light fixtures collect dust and grime with time.

Pro-tip: get a moisture absorber packet that you can hang in your closet so it stays dry and the moisture doesn’t create moisture.

The Study Space or Homework Corner

If your child has a dedicated desk or study area, make sure they have enough storage space and drawers or containers to organize their supplies.

Before buying any extra storage, do two things first: declutter with them so you can get rid of anything they won’t be using anymore, and then analyze what they are keeping and the proper type of storage they need for it.

For example, maybe they need a tall, narrow library to store books and large items, and if they have sports equipment or smaller items, perhaps they need a closet with drawers and closed cabinets.

If your child has a dedicated desk or study area, make sure they have enough storage space and drawers or containers to organize their supplies.

Clear everything off the desk surface. Wipe the desktop with a damp cloth, the keyboard and the mouse as well. Dust the lamp.

If you have a desk drawer, pull everything out and check if pens and markers are dried-up. If they are, throw them again. Cleaning them is easier if you can take them out, especially to wipe the bottom. If you can’t take the drawers out, vacuum them with a flat head nozzle.

Get a few drawer organizers to keep your pens, pencils and highlighters organized and tidy. Drawer organizers will also stop you from getting back to a messy drawer after 2 weeks.

If there’s shelving above the desk or nearby, wipe it down with a slightly damp cloth and organize books and supplies neatly. With open shelves, it’s important to choose what you’re putting there and not go overboard. Your brain’s attention is already divided when homework happens, you don’t want to get distracted by a crowded shelf with books, plants, and miscellaneous items.

The Kitchen and Dining Area

Keep in mind your kitchen is where mornings happen during school year, so it can become a bit chaotic. A clean, organized kitchen will make things ten times easier.

Wipe down the inside of your pantry. Food spills happen, crumbs accumulate, and a summer of activity means more chaos in there than usual. Clear shelves, wipe them down, and reorganize. Stock snacks and lunch items in clear containers if you can. When a kid can see exactly what snacks are available, they grab what’s there instead of asking you five times.

If you don’t have time to do the entire kitchen, focus on the areas for lunch containers and snacks. Pull everything out, toss expired items, and wipe down the inside of cabinets.

For dry items usually a dry towel is enough, but if you notice any spills or grease, clean first with a slightly damp cloth and a drop of dish soap and then with a clean, dry cloth. This prevents that “back of the cabinet smell” that happens when things get shoved in and forgotten.

The refrigerator needs specific attention. Clean the top of the fridge thoroughly. Wipe the coils in the back if you can access them, or call in a professional cleaning service if you want that handled properly. A refrigerator that’s clean inside and out runs better and smells better, which matters when you’re grabbing breakfast at 7:45 AM.

This doesn’t have to do with cleaning directly, but It’s always helpful to think of the way you move around your kitchen in the morning, it’s usually very methodical. Think of the tools, containers and ingredients you need to have at hand and organize them in a way they’re easy to reach.

Don’t skip the dining table or wherever kids actually eat. Wipe it down thoroughly and clean underneath. If there’s a chair for studying nearby, wipe that too.

Bathrooms: The Quick Reality Check

Bathrooms accumulate moisture, dust, and mildew during warm months. A quick but thorough bathroom clean before school starts is easy to achieve.

Clean the mirrors and glass shower doors if you have them. Use equal parts white vinegar and water, spray it on, let it sit for two minutes, and wipe with a microfiber cloth. This is a cheap replacement to a mirror cleaner and it leaves no streaks. The whole thing takes about five minutes.

Wipe down the baseboards with a Lysol wipe or a cloth with a tiny bit of all-purpose cleaner to remove summer dust. Clean the light fixture or at least the bulb and the outside of the fixture.

Organize under the sink. Toss old cleaning products and wipe the cabinet bottom. When the bathroom is clean and organized, kids are actually more likely to keep it that way. There’s a psychological thing that happens when a space feels cared for.

The Common Living Spaces

This is where you’ll notice the summer accumulation most. Dust on ceiling fans, fingerprints on light switches, and that general tired feeling that everything needs attention.

Dust the ceiling fans thoroughly. Use an extension pole with a microfiber duster if you can’t comfortably reach, or a pillowcase method if you prefer. Dust from ceiling fans settles on everything below, so doing this first helps. If you don’t have an extension pole, you can use a short staircase.

Wipe all light switches and door handles in high-traffic areas. Door handles especially accumulate bacteria and dust. Use a disinfecting wipe or a cloth with a tiny drop of dish soap.

Vacuum under the couch and under chair cushions. Kids accumulate more stuff during summer like snacks crumbs, dust from outdoor activities, general clutter. A good vacuum under and around furniture takes about ten minutes and makes a huge difference. Check the care tag first because different fabrics need different approaches. For some fabrics you can use a brush and soap, for other fabrics you can only use water, etc.

Wipe the baseboards in the living room and hallways. Use a Swiffer or a cloth with a little bit of all-purpose cleaner. Baseboards are the area where dust settles when nobody’s paying attention, and they’re the first thing you notice when walking into a room that’s actually been cleaned.

After cleaning all these areas, if you still have a bit of time and energy, stand in a corner and scan the room with your eyes, from left to right and top to bottom. This will help you realize the areas that may need a second round of cleaning or that haven’t been cleaned yet.

Windows and Screens

If your windows have been open all summer for ventilation, window tracks accumulate dirt and debris. Vacuum the tracks, then wipe them with a damp cloth. Wipe the sills.

Here’s a little trick to wipe the tracks if a damp cloth doesn’t fit: grab a cheap kitchen sponge. Measure your window tracks and apply those marks on the sponge, and use a cutter to cut horizontal lines halfway through the sponge. Use an all-purpose cleaner and spray a bit on the sponge.

For the window glass itself, a simple vinegar and water solution works. Apply with a spray bottle, let sit for two minutes, wipe with a microfiber cloth. Clean windows actually do affect how a room feels. Light comes in cleaner and the rooms might even feel bigger.

The Basement or Storage Areas

If you use a basement, storage closet, or attic for anything that comes back out during school year (sports equipment, instruments, art supplies), this is the time to check those spaces:

• Wipe dust off storage containers.
• Verify that sports equipment is actually in there if your kid plays a fall sport.
• Check that the instrument case isn’t sitting in moisture or mildew.

For your storage areas, if you have 2 – 3 hours, get a package of tags + markers on amazon and sort things out by category. If you don’t have containers or storage boxes, placing a tag with the category every 15 – 20” will help you keep things a bit more organized and easier to find.

It also encourages other family members to put things back where they belong after using them.

This is a great exercise because, while you’re organizing, it allows you to throwaway items that you don’t need anymore, anything that is broken or no longer working, etc.

Making It Sustainable

Here’s the thing about back-to-school cleaning: you don’t need a professional cleaning service to get your house ready. You need two to three hours, clear priorities, and the right approach.

Focus on the spaces where school life actually happens: bedrooms, study areas, bathrooms, and the kitchen. Everything else can be maintained with regular tidying during the school year.

The goal isn’t perfection before September 7th. It’s creating an environment where focus is possible, where a kid doesn’t walk into their bedroom and feel like they need a break before even sitting down to homework.

It’s been unusually slow lately, and apparently it isn’t just us. I have friends across north America who run house-cleaning companies, and many of them are saying the same thing: business has cooled off. That’s one of the joys of running a seasonal business. Some months you’re wondering how you’re going to fit everyone onto the schedule. Other months you stare at the schedule and wonder if the phone has been disconnected. Ups and downs are simply part of the business.

What actually got me thinking about this was my cousin’s wife, who is also in the cleaning industry. She had been lamenting the slowdown, so my cousin messaged me and asked what I thought. I told him basically the same thing I tell myself: sometimes things get slow. Don’t panic. If you do good work, treat people well, and keep showing up, the business tends to come back. And his wife does great work, so I told him not to worry too much. More money will eventually find its way through the door. Hopefully carrying a mop. Still, I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a little voice in the back of my mind whispering, “Yeah…but what if this time is different?”

Our neighbors to the south have decided to experiment with another trade war, and trade wars generally aren’t famous for making business owners sleep better at night. I suspect cooler heads will eventually prevail and some sort of deal will be reached, probably five minutes before everyone drives off the cliff. That seems to be how these things work these days. I could also use this opportunity to share a few thoughts about a certain orange-colored political figure, but I’m going to be polite and demonstrate tremendous personal restraint.

So what does all of this mean for Oakville and Canada? My guess is that the next few years could be uncomfortable as Canada adjusts its supply chains, diversifies its trading relationships, and becomes less economically dependent on the United States. Getting weaned off such heavy reliance on one enormous “special” customer probably isn’t a bad thing in the long run. But anyone who has ever tried to remove a five-year-old from an iPad knows that being weaned from something is rarely pleasant while it’s happening.

There may also be an unexpected upside: talent. History is full of periods when political or economic instability caused educated, skilled, ambitious people to pack their bags and look for somewhere else to build their lives. I have a feeling we’ll see more Americans doing exactly that and Canada is an obvious, and much more calm destination. In fact, some of that is already happening.

If Canada plays its cards right, it could benefit from attracting talented entrepreneurs, engineers, doctors, scientists, tradespeople, technology workers, and other productive people who decide they would rather build their futures north of the border. Now, that would be a tremendous opportunity. Of course, there’s one small problem. We’re going to need somewhere to put everybody.

Canada already has enough difficulty with housing, so attracting more people without building more homes would be a little like inviting 40 people to Thanksgiving and then discovering you own six chairs. Hopefully we can figure that part out too.

In the long run, though, I think diversifying our trade relationships while attracting the best people from down south could make Canada, and communities like Oakville, stronger. The difficult part will simply be weathering the adjustment period between where we are now and wherever the economy eventually settles.

So keep your elbows up, welcome our refugees… erm, newcomers from the south, support Canadian businesses, and remember, if the economy gets stressful, work gets overwhelming, and you suddenly realize you haven’t cleaned your dirty kitchen in three months…

… there is absolutely no shame in hiring a local, family-owned cleaning company. Hint… Hint…

Sometimes, making a difference starts with a remarkably simple question:

“How can I help?”

That question, asked by a member of our Oakville Maids family, ultimately helped set in motion a relief effort stretching from Oakville and Dallas all the way to communities affected by the devastating earthquake in Venezuela. And it all began with Karen.

An Oakville Maids Team Member Reaches Out

In the days following the earthquake, Valentina was watching communities in Venezuela struggle to respond to enormous needs. Local residents, medical professionals, shelters, and volunteers were gathering food, hygiene products, baby supplies, and other necessities for people in the affected areas. Valentina had already personally contributed two batches of supplies and was using her WhatsApp status to share information about collection centers and ways people could help. Then she received a message from Karen, a member of our Oakville Maids team.

Karen asked Valentina if she had a PayPal account or another way she could send money to help people affected by the earthquake. What makes the gesture even more touching is that Karen was about two weeks away from giving birth at the time. She certainly had plenty happening in her own life. Yet she was thinking about families thousands of kilometres away who suddenly found themselves needing help.

At first, Valentina hesitated.

Accepting someone else’s money meant taking responsibility for making sure it was converted into meaningful assistance and actually reached people who needed it. But Valentina also realized that she didn’t want to stand in the way of someone who genuinely wanted to help.

Karen’s question planted a seed. And that seed grew.

From One Person to an Entire Team

The idea eventually reached Angela and the team at our parent company, Dallas Maids, where employees were invited to contribute if they wished. The response was wonderful.

Over aproximately two weeks, the Dallas Maids cleaning teams contributed what they could, gradually filling a donation box. By the time the box was opened, the ladies had raised $265. There was no corporate fundraising campaign behind it. Nobody was required to participate. It was simply a group of people seeing others in need and deciding to do something about it.

The money was transferred through Valentina’s family so that it could be converted locally and used to purchase supplies in Venezuela. Then Valentina went to work making every dollar count.

Turning Donations Into Real Help

Valentina spent her free time comparing prices so she could stretch the team’s contributions as far as possible. She also kept everyone updated along the way, sharing photographs and an accounting of what was purchased so the people who donated could see the impact of their generosity. And that impact became very real. The contributions helped purchase baby formula, diapers, baby food, juice, cookies, hygiene products, toilet paper, food staples, and other everyday necessities. Some supplies were destined for families in the affected areas. Others were being provided to shelters that had taken in people displaced by the disaster. In an update to the team, Valentina explained what their generosity meant:

“Thanks to you and your generosity, there will be babies who have their formula and diapers, children who have food, and families who have hygiene products.”

Suddenly, a collection that began with one message wasn’t simply about dollars anymore. It meant a baby having formula. A parent having diapers. A family having soap and basic hygiene supplies. A shelter having additional food to prepare meals. Those are the moments when a donation becomes something much more tangible.

Doubles the Contribution

When Greg Shepard, CEO of Oakville Maids, heard what the team had accomplished, he decided to match the $265 raised by the employees, bringing the total contribution to $530.

The additional funds mean even more supplies can make their way to people who need them. But as wonderful as the company match is, the most meaningful part of this story happened before any company money was added. It all happened when one employee simply decided she wanted to help.

From Oakville to Venezuela

The purchased supplies have been coordinated with people on the ground in Venezuela, including medical professionals who have been collecting and distributing relief donations. Some of the hygiene products are being included in relief packages destined for affected communities in and around La Guaira. Food products are also being directed to local shelters that have taken in people from the affected areas.

Valentina has continued documenting the process and sharing updates with the employees who contributed so they can follow their donations from the collection box all the way to the people receiving the assistance. That transparency matters. The people who gave aren’t simply hearing that their money “went to charity.” They can actually see the formula. They can see the diapers. They can see the food. And ultimately, they can see the people their generosity is helping.

This Is the Kind of Culture We’re Proud Of

At Oakville Maids, we talk a lot about taking care of people. Usually, that means taking care of our customers, supporting our cleaning professionals, or helping someone come home to a cleaner and more comfortable house. But caring for people doesn’t necessarily stop at a customer’s front door. Sometimes it reaches much farther. In this case, it reached thousands of kilometres away.

What makes this story particularly special to us is that it began with someone from Oakville Maids simply asking if she could help. Karen didn’t organize a fundraiser. She didn’t know her question would eventually inspire a larger effort. She just saw people suffering and wanted to do something. And Valentina found a way to turn that generosity into real assistance. Angela helped bring her team together. They filled a donation box. And many small acts of kindness became one much larger one.

One Question Can Make a Difference

Businesses often talk about company culture. But culture isn’t really something written in an employee handbook or displayed on a wall. You see it in what people choose to do when nobody is telling them what to do. Someone sees people struggling and asks:

“Can I help?”

Someone else says:

“Yes. Here’s how.”

Then another person joins.

And another.

That’s how a message from an Oakville Maids employee ultimately helped put food, diapers, formula, and essential supplies into the hands of people facing an extraordinarily difficult situation in Venezuela. To Karen, Valentina, Angela, and everyone who played a part:

I Love Canada. Seriously.

I just got back from five weeks traveling through Malaysia and Vietnam. And it was wonderful with its beautiful beaches, amazing food, ancient streets, tropical scenery, time with family and enough noodles and rice to sustain a small civilization. But after five weeks away, I realized something: I really, really missed Canada. More specifically, I missed Oakville.

There’s something about being away for a long time that makes you notice the little things you normally take for granted. This morning I was walking my dog through one of West Oaks Trail’s trails. The air was cool, the trees were green, the neighborhood was quiet, the lawns looked like they had been individually groomed by tiny landscaping professionals with rulers, and I thought, “Man, it is good to be home.”

I’ve now traveled to around 40 countries and one of the greatest benefits of traveling is that it gives you perspective. You begin to appreciate things you might otherwise barely notice. Clean streets. Beautiful parks. Safe neighborhoods. Trails built simply because somebody decided people should have pleasant places to walk. Cool summer evenings. Orderly traffic (mostly). And, of course, Canadians politely apologizing to each other when neither person actually did anything wrong.

Canada certainly isn’t perfect. No country is. And yes, Canadians complain about politics, taxes, the weather, The Leafs. Probably especially the Leafs. But travel has taught me that sometimes the things we complain about are happening inside a place that is, by almost any global standard, an extraordinarily nice place to live. Coming home to Oakville reminded me of that.

As I walked through my neighborhood, looking at the manicured lawns and beautiful homes, breathing in the cool air and knowing my family was home with me, I felt gratitude. I’m grateful that my family has the opportunity to live here. I’m grateful my kids get to grow up here. And I’m grateful that Oakville has welcomed us and allowed us to build a life and a business here.

Which brings me, rather shamelessly, to Oakville Maids.

When we started Oakville Maids, I wanted to build a company worthy of the community it serves. Because if Oakville is going to insist on having beautiful neighborhoods, perfectly trimmed lawns and houses that look suspiciously like nobody actually lives in them… well, somebody has to keep the inside clean too  That’s our little contribution.

I may travel all over the world, and I hope I always do. There are still countries I want to see, foods I want to eat, beaches I want to sit on, and probably several airports where I will inevitably become confused. But one of the best parts of traveling is coming home. And after five weeks away, I can say it with a little more appreciation than before:

I love Canada.

And there’s no place I’d rather call home than Oakville. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have five weeks of Canadian mail to go through.

There are certain milestones in business ownership that make you feel like you’ve “made it.” Your first customer. Your first employee. Your first profit. And, apparently, getting your company name on a giant outdoor sign after years of being at the same address. So, this week, I drove by 407 Speers Road and saw something I had been waiting far longer than I care to admit to see:

Right there on the sign. In actual letters. Visible from the road. Not hidden in Suite 203L, behind a directory, around a corner, or requiring a scavenger hunt and three clues from Indiana Jones to locate. Just… there. For everyone to see. I probably stared at it longer than a mentally healthy person should.

My wife didn’t quite understand my excitement. “It’s just a sign…” No honey bunny. It’s our sign. Eh, business owners will understand.

For years, whenever someone asked where we were located, I’d proudly say, “407 Speers Road.” Then I’d immediately have to follow up with, “Suite 203L.” Then, “Upstairs.” Then, “Second door on the right.” Then, “Pass reception area, first door on the left.” And then”Yes, we’re actually there.” Then, “No, really.” Then, “No, we’re not a virtual office.” Then, “Yes, Google knows we’re there.” Then, “Yes, I can prove it.”

At some point, it felt less like giving directions and more like defending my existence.

Now? People drive by and see us. No explanations required, no treasure map required, no interpretive dance required. Just a giant sign saying:

OAKVILLE MAIDS

Glorious.

Of course, now that we’re on the sign, I find myself checking it every time I drive past. I don’t mean intentionally. My eyes just drift toward it. A completely normal and healthy behavior. I certainly haven’t taken photographs of it. Or sent those photographs to friends, family, employees, or random people who didn’t ask.

That would be ridiculous.

What makes this especially meaningful is that Oakville Maids is still relatively young compared to Dallas Maids, which I’ve operated for more than two decades. Starting over in a new country was both exciting and humbling. Nobody knew who we were. We had no reputation, no customer base, and no history in the community. Now, little by little, we’re building something.

Customers are finding us, our team is growing, the business is growing, and now our name is literally on the sign. It’s a small thing, but sometimes the small things are reminders that progress is happening. So if you happen to drive by 407 Speers Road and notice Oakville Maids on the sign, know that somewhere nearby there is a business owner smiling a little more than he probably should.

Your house survived Canada Day.

Barely.

The flags were flying, the burgers were grilling, the fireworks were booming, and at some point, someone definitely walked through the house with shoes that had no business being indoors. But that’s Canada Day. It’s family, friends, food, fun, and just enough chaos to remind you why us cleaning companies exist.

Before we get to the crumbs, spills, sticky floors, and mystery stains, let’s take a quick moment to appreciate why we celebrate Canada Day in the first place. Canada Day is celebrated every year on July 1st. It marks the anniversary of Confederation in 1867, when Canada officially became a country under the British North America Act. It was originally called Dominion Day, but today we know it as Canada Day, a time to celebrate the country, its communities, its natural beauty, its freedoms, and, of course, the national ability to apologize even when someone else bumps into you.

Here in Oakville, Canada Day is a wonderful time to enjoy the summer, gather with friends and family, and appreciate being part of such a beautiful community… And then July 2nd arrives. That’s when the real national event begins: cleaning up. Now, here is what to tackle first after the Canada Day party…

Step One: Start with the Trash

This is not the glamorous part of post-party cleanup, but it is the most important. Before you start wiping counters, vacuuming floors, or pretending the kitchen doesn’t exist, grab a garbage bag and walk through the house. Collect paper plates, napkins, empty cups, food wrappers, broken decorations, and anything that looks like it gave up around 9:30 p.m.

Don’t forget the backyard or patio. Canada Day has a way of spreading debris like confetti. One minute people are politely enjoying snacks outside, and the next morning your lawn looks like it hosted a small diplomatic summit involving ketchup, paper plates, and juice boxes.

And don’t wforget to separate recycling as you go. Future you will appreciate not having to dig cans out of a garbage bag later. Future you has been through enough.

Step Two: Kitchen Rescue

The kitchen is usually command central for Canada Day celebrations. It is also where good intentions go to die.

Start with the obvious: put away leftover food. If something has been sitting out too long, especially in the summer heat, it is probably not worth the risk. No one needs “Canada Day Potato Salad Regret” as a family tradition.

Next, clear the counters. Load the dishwasher. Hand wash anything oversized. Wipe down the stove, counters, sink, and any surface that appears to have been attacked by barbecue sauce. If you grilled, check the area around the back door too. Somehow barbecue sauce and grease can travel farther than most small aircrafts.

Step Three: Handle the Sticky Floors

After Canada Day, floors often tell the story of the party. There was foot traffic. There were drinks. There were kids. There may have been watermelon. There was definitely someone who said, “Don’t worry, I’ll clean that up,” and then absolutely did not clean that up.

During a party, bathrooms quietly become the most important rooms in the house. You may have spent hours preparing food, decorating, and making the backyard look welcoming. But if guests are coming over, the bathroom is where they make their silent judgments.

After the party, give each bathroom a quick reset. Empty the trash, wipe the counters, clean the sink, check the toilet, replace towels, and make sure there is still soap. If you hosted a larger gathering, this is not optional. This is a public safety issue. Okay, maybe not public safety. But close.

Step Five: Attack the Mystery Stains

Every party leaves behind at least one mystery stain. It might be on the couch. It might be on the rug. It might be on a dining chair. It might be red, brown, orange, or some new colour invented by children and popsicles. But the key is to deal with stains quickly. Blot, don’t rub. Once the major cleanup is done, focus on the areas where people gathered. Fluff the pillows. Fold the blankets. Straighten the chairs. Wipe the tables. Remove drink rings. Vacuum the living room. Put away anything that migrated from another room and has no explanation for being there.

This is the part where your home starts to feel like your home again, instead of a community centre that briefly served burgers.

Step Seven: Don’t Forget the Outside

If you celebrated outdoors, your patio, deck, porch, or backyard probably needs some attention. Check for plates and cups, napkins. food scraps, decorations, firework debris, if applicable, sticky tables, and spills around outdoor furniture. Also check under patio furniture. Guests, especially children, have an incredible ability to hide snack evidence in places no adult would think to look.

Step Eight: Open the Windows

After a house full of food, guests, pets, kids, and summer heat, fresh air helps. So open the windows if the weather allows. Let the house breathe a little. This helps clear food smells, smoke from grilling, and that vague “a-lot-of-people-were-here” scent… Yes, that is a real scent. No, science has not officially named it yet.

I was having dinner with a few friends in Mississauga when the conversation drifted to the cost of an education. One friend was venting about how expensive her daughter’s education at the University of Toronto was becoming.

“It’s over $7,000 a year once you include tuition, books, food, and everything else,” she said in frustration.

“Wait… $7,000 a year?” I asked. “Reeally!?”

“Yes!” she replied, as if this number alone should require emotional support and a government bailout.

Now, maybe my perspective is warped from my glory years at Baylor University down in Texas, but I immediately thought back to the 1990s when my education there was already approaching what felt like the GDP of a small nation. So naturally, I pulled out my phone and checked Baylor’s current costs.

Ladies and gentlemen… Baylor University undergraduate tuition for 2025–2026 is $88022.00 CAD per year for tuition only. That’s not counting housing, food, or textbooks, which are priced, on average, at $2200.00 CAD! So, when I showed her the number, she literally gasped. Then she went silent for a moment. Actually, several moments. The kind of silence where your brain quietly recalculates every life decision you’ve ever made.

Then I checked University of Torontos’ tuition to see if she had been exaggerating. Um, she wasn’t.

Suddenly both of us were sitting there in stunned silence, realizing that a four-year degree at the University of Toronto can cover only one semester at Baylor. And that’s when it hit me: this is one of the benefits of a social democracy. Stronger protections against price gouging and runaway pricing, lower tuition, universal healthcare, and fewer situations where people need to choose between “higher education” and “remaining financially alive.”

And don’t even get me started on healthcare costs. Americans pay around twice as much as Canadians, even after factoring in taxes. In the U.S., medical debt is the leading causes of family bankruptcy. In Canada, the average person doesn’t fear financial annihilation because they had the audacity to require surgery.

But back to university costs.

Today, a four-year tuition bill at the University of Toronto is roughly $24,000 CAD for many undergraduate programs. My alma mater? Around $149,000 CAD in tuition alone. Which means a full four-year education at U of T costs a little more than a single semester (eg half a year) at Baylor.

Woah. Erm, Sic ’em Bears… I guess?

And this is exactly why I started an education savings plan for my daughters years ago. The funny part is that, based on what I’ve saved so far, I may have overshot the target by… well… a healthy six figures. And they still have 7 and 13 years before university if they attend University of Toronto. Eh, I’d even be happy with McGill. But wither way, seems education is a cost I need not worry about now.

Anyway, sometimes you don’t fully appreciate what you have until you compare it with somewhere else. And after doing the math on the cost of an education here, I have to admit: The grass is looking a little greener here in Canada.
