(Yes, this counts as business development.)

Yesterday my wife and I attended a chocolate and coffee tasting at Chocolate and Love Cafe in Mississauga, and I’m happy to report that after extensive testing, research, and sampling, I can confirm that chocolate and coffee are both excellent.

We were invited by Oakville News, which caught my attention recently when I learned Oakville Maids was voted Best House Cleaning in the Oakville News Reader Favourite Awards for 2025. So when Charlene from Oakville News sent an email about a chocolate tasting event, I figured this sounded like a very important business networking opportunity that absolutely required chocolate and coffee.

For business purposes, of course.

The Event

The event was an interactive tasting where we paired different chocolates with different drinks. We were given tasting sheets and told to evaluate things like sweetness, bitterness, texture, and flavour notes. At one point I felt like a professional chocolate sommelier. Or at least someone pretending to be one. Anyway, we learned that sweetness softens bitterness, freshness lifts richness, and texture shapes perception.

The Pairings

Some of the pairings included Sea Salt Caramel Chocolate + Maple Latte, 70% Dark Chocolate + Caffè Latte, and Citrus Dark Chocolate + Hibiscus Iced Tea. I can confirm that all of these pairings were excellent and that I would happily continue testing them for research purposes if necessary.

Meeting Other Oakville Business Owners

One of the best parts of the event was meeting other local business owners from Oakville and the surrounding area. We had some great conversations, shared business stories, and made a few new contacts.

I also had the chance to share a bit about the Oakville Maids story, how we started, how we’ve grown, and how proud we are to serve Oakville and the surrounding communities.

It’s always nice meeting other business owners because everyone has similar stories such as hiring challenges, customer stories, marketing experiments, and the occasional “you won’t believe what happened this week” story. If you own a business, you know exactly what I mean.

Thank You Oakville News

We really appreciate Oakville News for hosting events like this and for supporting local businesses. Being voted Best House Cleaning in Oakville by readers meant a lot to us, and it’s great to be part of a community that supports local companies. We’re looking forward to future networking events.

Final Thoughts

So overall, it was a great afternoon: Good chocolate. Good coffee. Good conversations. Met some great local business owners. And I got to call eating chocolate “networking”. So, not a bad day. And if you ever need house cleaning in Oakville or Burlington… we promise we won’t judge your chocolate stash.

The post Chocolate, Coffee, and Networking: A Tough Day at Work in Oakville first appeared on Oakville Maids | House Cleaning Services.

The post Chocolate, Coffee, and Networking: A Tough Day at Work in Oakville appeared first on Oakville Maids | House Cleaning Services.

When my family and I started looking for a home in Oakville, we expected the process to take weeks… maybe even months. Instead, thanks to our amazing realtor Eugénie Eckler, we found our perfect home in just one day.

From the very beginning, Eugénie took the time to understand what we were looking for. She asked questions about the type of neighbourhood we wanted, what mattered most for our family, and what kind of home would feel right for us.

What impressed me most was how prepared she was.

Rather than spending weeks showing us homes that weren’t quite the right fit, she carefully selected a few properties that matched exactly what we were looking for. On our very first day touring homes, we walked into one and immediately knew… this is it.

But finding the home was only part of what made working with Eugénie such a great experience. It all can feel overwhelming with all the details involved, the paperwork, deadlines, negotiations, inspections, and everything in between. Eugénie made the entire process feel surprisingly simple. She was organized, responsive, and always one step ahead, guiding us through every stage so nothing felt stressful or confusing.

Because of how great our experience was, we decided to team up with Eugénie to make moving even easier for her clients.

If you buy or sell a home with Eugénie, she’ll cover the cost of a professional house cleaning before you move in or after you move out.

Connect with Eugénie now!

Moving is already a lot of work. Packing, coordinating movers, and getting settled into a new place is enough without having to scrub bathrooms or clean inside cabinets. So whether you need a sparkling clean home before moving in or a professional move-out clean before listing your house, Eugénie has that covered.

The cleaning is handled by our team at Oakville Maids, or if you’re in Burlington, Oakville Maids of Burlington. And it’s just one more way she tries to make the moving process smoother for the families she works with.

If you’re thinking about buying or selling a home in Oakville or Burlington, I can personally say Eugénie is amazing to work with. She helped us find the perfect home quickly and made the whole process incredibly easy.

And the free house cleaning is a pretty great bonus too.

The post Moving in Oakville Burlington?

If you’re thinking about starting a business, that alone puts you ahead of most people. Most people talk about starting something. Very few actually do it. Starting your own business is one of the most empowering decisions you can make. You answer to yourself. You control the upside. You build something that didn’t exist before. Yes, there’s risk , but looking back, I realized it wasn’t risk that scared me. It was discomfort. And success doesn’t come from avoiding discomfort. It comes from hunger. If you’re hungry enough, you won’t fail. You might pivot. You might struggle. You might adjust. But you won’t quit. And quitting is what kills most businesses, not bad ideas.

The biggest obstacle isn’t competition. It isn’t the economy (I started my first business in the tail wind of the dot com bust and through the 2007 financial crisis, and continually grew through both). It isn’t lack of capital. It’s fear. Fear of failure. Fear of embarrassment. Fear of instability. But the real mistake isn’t failing. It’s never starting. If you’ve already taken action, even small action, you’re ahead of the majority. That matters more than you think.

When I decided I wanted to start a business, I didn’t wait for a lightning bolt of genius. I started writing down ideas. Every single one. For an entire year, anytime an idea popped into my head, I wrote it down. Cooking dinner. Random middle-of-the-night thoughts. Sitting in a meeting. Even siting on the toilet. The spontaneous ideas are powerful because your subconscious is always working in the background. When something keeps resurfacing, that’s worth paying attention to. After a year, I had a long list. And here’s the secret: you don’t find a great idea by having one idea. You find it by having fifty. When you look at a long list, a few will stand out. For me, that idea was a house cleaning service. I just had a compelling feeling that I couldn’t fail. More on this from my writings on on reddit and on my blog here and here.

Cleaning wasn’t glamorous. It wasn’t trendy. Venture capitalists weren’t lining up. But I knew I wouldn’t fail at it. That confidence wasn’t arrogance, it was alignment. It solved a real problem. It had recurring revenue. It was scalable. And it didn’t require millions of dollars to start. Many people think they need a revolutionary, unicorn-level idea. In reality, most of those fail. Boring businesses win. Cleaning services. Painting companies. Lawn care. Moving services. Pet sitting. They solve everyday problems. And everyday problems always have customers.

Once I chose the idea, I didn’t overcomplicate the launch. I didn’t wait for perfection. I didn’t tell anyone. I just acted upon my conviction and got going. My first website was basic, painfully basic by today’s standards. But it worked. Within 10 days, it started bringing in business. Why? Because it solved a problem and it was visible. I learned SEO by pretending I was the customer and searching phrases like “maid service dallas” or “house cleaning dallas” and studying what showed up. On many of those sites I was able to get a backlink (e.g. a link from their website to mine) which propoelled my website to the top of Google. That one skill changed everything and I share my SEO secrets here (I recommend reading this!). When customers call you, they’re already warm. That’s far easier than chasing them. I also passed out thousands of flyers per week. It wasn’t glamorous. It was a numbers game. Consistency beats creativity in the beginning. Later, when I hired my first office manager (As an olympic athlete, she enjoyed the workout), she helped me pass out even more flyers. Business boomed.

The real turning point, though, wasn’t marketing. It was systems. Building a business is like writing code. You create the process, you test it, you fix it, and you refine it until it produces consistent results for your user, aka customer. Before hiring anyone, I did the job myself. I learned the best way to do it, then documented it clearly. If a 12-year-old can follow your instructions, you’ve done it right. Businesses scale through systems, not hustle alone. Systems create freedom. Business owners are often relunctant to release control because “no one can o it better than me” line of thinking. Don’t fall into this trap. Find the right people and empower them to do the job. More on this below.

Systems automate your business. Once you have the right SOPs in place and your team is humming along, something interesting can happen… you might get bored.

That’s actually a good sign.

It means the chaos is gone. The business runs on systems, not adrenaline.

When that happened to me, I traveled the world for a while. But even then, I was still bored. So I started another business using the same systems. And it was surprisingly easy. Then I got bored again and I started another. And another.

At one point I told myself Oakville Maids would be my last. But if I get bored again, I may just write a book because creating something from nothing, offering a service people truly appreciate, and making their lives easier gives an overwhelming sense of purpose. It’s hard to replicate that feeling in a traditional job. And I want to share my knowledge to make this dream come true for others.

Anyway, I digress.

Hiring the right people is make-or-break for any business. Hiring A-players can propel your company further than you ever imagined. Hiring the wrong people can quietly sink it. I’ve seen both. That’s why hiring isn’t something you rush. It’s something you engineer.

You build a hiring process the same way you build your service systems: intentionally, carefully, and with high standards. Because once you have the right people aligned with the right systems, growth becomes far easier and far more sustainable. So, hire slowly. Train thoroughly. Protect your culture. Your reputation depends on it. And reputation is everything. Deliver exceptional service, protect your reviews, and treat your customers like they matter because they do.

Over time, I also learned that talent isn’t limited by geography. Some of the strongest contributors in my companies were from hiring remote team members around the world. By hiring exceptional people internationally and paying them above their local market rates, I’ve been able to build a high-caliber team while still maintaining smart operating margins. I have team members who review call recordings to ensure quality control, track KPIs so I have a clear bird’s-eye view of performance, assist with recruiting, manage operations, handle SEO research, and support marketing. That additional layer of support has dramatically increased the consistency and professionalism of our services.

Remote talent, when managed properly with clear systems and expectations, can be a massive advantage. It allows you to raise standards without dramatically raising overhead. But it only works if your systems are strong. Systems first, then scale.

If you’re trying to decide what business to start, don’t wait for fear to disappear. It won’t. Write down a long list of ideas. Choose the one that feels aligned and practical. Start small. Execute consistently. Improve relentlessly. Read constantly. Learn from mistakes.

I remember feeling lost early in my career, unsure of what direction to take. The moment everything changed wasn’t when I found the perfect idea. It was when I decided to act. That decision turned into my first company. And that first company grew into something far bigger than I imagined. So, stay hungry, build systems, hire wisely, and keep improving, you can create something meaningful, something that not only supports your life, but improves the lives of others too.

And that’s worth building.

At Oakville Maids, we’ve always believed that the people who do the work are the business. Not the logo. Not the mop. Not the scheduling software. The people. That’s why we’re proud to be a certified Living Wage Employer, something we wrote about last year when we officially earned that certification.

But recently, something pretty cool happened: Oakville News noticed.

In a recent article titled “How can Oakville businesses afford to pay living wages?”, Oakville News highlighted local companies, including Oakville Maids, that are choosing to do things a little differently. And yes, a little more responsibly.

So… how do businesses afford it?

Short answer: by not running their business like it’s 1998.

Longer answer: paying a living wage isn’t about being a charity or lighting money on fire. It’s about building a sustainable company where staff actually stick around, care about their work, and don’t need to work three jobs just to survive.

When you pay people fairly, turnover drops (training new staff constantly is expensive, by the way), quality goes up (happy cleaners do better work… shocking, we know), customers are happier (they see the difference), and management spends less time putting out fires.

In other words, it’s not magic. It’s math.

The Oakville News article does a great job addressing the question many business owners quietly ask: “Sure, that sounds nice… but can we actually afford it?” The answer, increasingly, is YES, if you’re willing to run a modern business and not squeeze every last dollar out of the people doing the hardest work.

We won’t pretend it’s always easy. Paying a living wage means being thoughtful about pricing, efficiency, and growth. It means saying no to shortcuts. It means playing the long game. But here’s the thing: the long game is where the good businesses survive. As Warren Buffett’s famous advice on this is usually summed up with this line:

“Time is the friend of the wonderful company, the enemy of the mediocre.”

We’re proud Oakville News chose to feature this conversation, and we’re even prouder that Oakville Maids is part of it. Cleaning homes is what we do, but taking care of our people is how we do it.

And frankly, it just feels like the right thing to do. Even if it’s not always the easist path.

Thanks for reading,
Oakville Maids

The post Paying a Living Wage: Turns Out It’s Not the End of the World (or Your Business) first appeared on Oakville Maids | House Cleaning Services.

The post Paying a Living Wage: Turns Out It’s Not the End of the World (or Your Business) appeared first on Oakville Maids | House Cleaning Services.

We’re excited (and honestly, pretty humbled) to share that Oakville Maids has been named a Consumer Choice Award winner for 2026.

If you know us, you know we’re not the type to chase awards just for the sake of it. Our focus has always been simple: show up, clean properly, respect people’s homes, and treat our professional home cleaners fairly and with dignity. So when an award comes directly from consumer feedback, it means a lot more to us.

What makes the Consumer Choice Award especially meaningful is how winners are chosen. The process involves gathering unbiased consumer opinions from online and social media sources, analyzed by Advanced Symbolics International (ASI), a leading North American, AI-driven market research firm. In other words, this isn’t a popularity contest or a panel of judges picking names out of a hat. It’s real data, real feedback, and real customer experiences.

Consumer Choice Award’s dynamic selection process is designed to produce some of the most sophisticated, consumer-driven results available today. Their methodology ensures that only the most outstanding companies across North America earn this recognition, which makes being selected even more meaningful to us.

This award belongs just as much to our house cleaning teams as it does to the company itself. They’re the ones showing up day after day, often early in the morning or late in the evening, making sure homes are cleaned thoroughly and consistently. Cleaning isn’t glamorous work, but it’s important work, and they take pride in doing it right.

It also belongs to our customers. Many of you have been with us for years. You refer us. You leave reviews. You trust us with your homes, your keys, and your schedules. That trust is something we work hard to earn and even harder to keep.

We’ve been refining our systems for over two decades now, finding what works, what doesn’t, and how to improve without cutting corners because we prefer to clean them… hmmm, “We don’t cut corners, we clean them!” would be an amazing slogan, but I digress… There’s no secret sauce, really. Just steady improvements, listening closely to feedback, and trying to do better than we did yesterday. Winning this award tells us we’re on the right track.

To everyone who voted, supported us, or welcomed us into your home: thank you. We’re deeply grateful, and we’re definately motivated to keep raising the bar.

Here’s to 2026, to clean homes, and to continuing to serve Oakville with care, respect, and a little extra elbow grease where it counts.

Anyway, time to figure out where to hang this honor:

When our family moved to Ontario, we expected colder weather, beautiful parks, and a lot more snow-related Googling (“how to shovel without dying” was a popular search in our house). What we didn’t expect was how quickly Oakville would wrap us in a sense of belonging, not just for us, but especially for our daughters.

One of the first signs, literally, happened before we ever stepped foot inside her new school. We drove by what would soon become her elementary school and right there under the Canadian flag was a Pride flag flying proudly. I pleasantly surprised (and somewhat shocked) as celebrating diversity is something you’d never see at a Texas public school (sad, I know). So, I slowed down, parked in the front of the school and behind the flag pole, grabbed my phone, and took a picture. It was one of those small moments that told us, “Okay… this place is different.” It made my wife and I grateful that we had moved our family somewhere so openly welcoming and it gently reminded me how much some places still struggle to embrace that same spirit.

Her school soon confirmed what that flag hinted at. Pride displays (all photos in this article were taken from her school). Inclusive artwork. Positive messages. The message was everywhere: Celebrate Diversity. Teachers who seemed determined to make every child feel like they truly fit in. Coming from a school where none of this existed, it was a meaningful change. Our daughter noticed it. We noticed it. And frankly, it made us deeply grateful to call this community home.

As we walked the hallways on our way for a parent/teacher conference, we saw displays celebrating diversity, kindness, acceptance, and community spirit. I took pictures, a lot of pictures, partly because it was refreshing and partly because a tiny voice inside me whispered, “Wow… this is different in the best way.”

As we waited for our turn to speak with the teacher, I noticed a sign on my daughter’s classroom door that read, “This is a safe space,” written with a rainbow-colored heart. It was such a simple message, but it said so much about the environment she’s learning in.

And that’s what makes Oakville and all of Canada special.

It’s a place where families don’t just live, they thrive. Where schools try to teach kids not just math and reading, but how to treat others with dignity and respect. Where you can feel the difference the moment you step into a classroom, attend a local event, or see the community come together.

At Oakville Maids, we love being part of a town like this. A positive space that values kindness and inclusion is a place we’re proud to serve. After all, we’re invited into people’s homes, their safe spaces, and that’s an honor we don’t take lightly. Being in a community that believes everyone belongs only strengthens our commitment to serving people with care, respect, and the same warmth Oakville showed us from day one.

So here’s our little love letter to Oakville: Thank you. Thank you for welcoming newcomers. Thank you for respecting human rights. Thank you for creating an environment where every child, including ours, can walk into school and feel like they belong.

And thank you for being the kind of community where even a house cleaning company can say, with complete sincerity, “This place feels like home.”

We appreciate this town, this community, and the people who make it what it is. We are thankful to be welcome here. We’re grateful to serve Oakville, one home, one family, and sometimes one rainbow-decorated hallway at a time.

Gratefully,

~ Gregory

Stay Cozy, Stay Clean (Even When the Snow Doesn’t)

Winter in Oakville is beautiful; the soft snowfall, the cozy sweaters, and the wonderful, winter wonderland. But as lovely as winter looks from inside your living room window, it also brings with it a whole new set of “Why is my floor always wet?” and “When did we track in half of Lakeshore Road?” problems.

Don’t worry. You’re not alone.
Here’s how to keep your home feeling fresh, warm, and welcoming during these chilly months.

1. The Great Salt vs. Floors Battle

If your entryway currently looks like someone spilled a bag of sea salt and then danced in it… welcome to winter.

Salt, slush, and melted snow love to leave streaks and patches all over hardwood and tile.

Quick fix:

Keep a shoe tray by the door

Lay down a washable, absorbent mat

And kindly remind family members that shoes-off is non-negotiable

(This reminder may require bribery. Cookies work.)

2. Rotate Your Cleaning Routine (Just Like Tires)

In the winter, your priorities shift a bit:

Floors → daily or every other day

Dusting → once a week (homes get cozier, aka dustier)

Bathrooms → don’t ignore them (hot showers + closed windows = moisture)

You don’t need to go full “January resolution cleaning ninja”. Just shift where you give a little extra attention.

3. Add Cozy Without Adding Clutter

Winter makes us want blankets, pillows, candles, warm drinks, and… more blankets. The trick is to edit. For every blanket added, retire one to storage. The goal is warm and inviting, not “Did a pillow factory explode in here?”

4. Fresh Air (Yes, Even When It’s Cold)

It might sound counterintuitive, but open a window for 5 minutes a day.

Why?

Stale indoor air builds up dust and odors

Quick bursts of cold air help refresh the entire house

It makes you feel alive in a “I chose to live in Canada” kind of way

Just don’t forget to close the window.

Don’t ask me how I know.

5. Let Someone Else Do the Heavy Lifting

Winter is for:

Hot tea

Cozy socks

Reading beside the window

Watching the snowfall like a peaceful Canadian painting

Winter is not for:

Scrubbing baseboards

Deep cleaning bathrooms

Wrestling with vacuum cords

This is where we come in.

At Oakville Maids, we help keep your home clean, cozy, and calm, so you can actually enjoy the beauty of winter instead of cleaning up after it.

Stay warm. We’ll handle the cleaning.
(And yes, we show up even when it’s snowing. We’re Canadian. We’re trained for this.)

Final Thoughts

Winter in Oakville is charming, beautiful, and definately a little messy. With a few simple habits, and maybe a friendly professional cleaning team (hint, hint), your home can stay spotless, warm, and welcoming all season long. And if you want help, we’d love to clean your home while you enjoy the view snowing gently outside the window.

If you ever want to test the strength of a team, forget trust falls and escape rooms. Just ask everyone to design a flyer together.

This month, Oakville Maids launched our first-ever direct mail campaign with 25,000 flyers headed to mailboxes across Oakville. Yes, we went old school. Paper. Ink. Real mailboxes. The whole thing. But like every great adventure, ours began with chaos, creativity, and a Canada Post strike.

The Idea

We wanted to try something new to introduce ourselves to more neighbors, especially since we had recently hired a couple of amazing cleaners, one who’s clean actually seemed magical… but that’s another story. Anyway, a physical flyer feels personal, something cheerful in between credit card offers and political mailers, and a way to hopefully fill the schedule of our newly hired, talented cleaners.

So we said, “Let’s design some flyers!”

Easy, right?

Ha!

The Great Flyer Design Battle (WhatsApp Edition)

We created a WhatsApp group (aptly named, “Direct Mail Design – Oakville Maid”) for the team to collaborate. This is where things got interesting.

Very quickly, we realized:

Fonts are emotional

Everyone has very strong opinions about color tones

And choosing a photo of a mop is apparently a deeply philosophical experience

We ended up with five flyer designs. Yes, FIVE.

Why five?
Because no one could agree and because democracy is beautiful.

Each one had its own personality:

Flyer Designer

Vibe

Key Feature

Jill

Friendly, clean, warm

Apparently magic, see below

Alex

“More modern”

Then less modern… then modern again… then…

Mary

“Let’s try something bold!”

The fonts were yelling.

Greg

Very classy

Possibly too classy for dust bunnies

Val

Cute, colorful, “trust us we clean”

We fell in love. It happens.

We decided to let the people of Oakville decide which one wins.
No arguments. No debates.
Just pure flyer battle royale.

And Then… Canada Post Happened

Just when we were ready to send them out, Canada Post paused deliveries.

Nothing like a postal strike to humble your marketing timeline.

So we waited.
And waited.
And tried not to refresh the Canada Post news feed every 10 minutes.

One thing we learned: Canada Post workers are very polite, even while on strike.

This Week: The Flyers Finally Went Out

If you’ve ever worked in the cleaning industry, you know every day is an adventure. Some homes sparkle after you’re done. Others… require a deep clean for your soul.

But every once in a while, a story comes along that makes you question whether you accidentally signed up to clean a haunted house.

Allow us to introduce the man who accused our maid of witchcraft.

The Almighty Blessing

It all started beautifully. Through the charity Cleaning for a Reason, we were matched to help a couple, both cancer patients, with two free cleanings. After our first visit, Mr. Naeem sent us a message that made our hearts melt:

“It’s like my spouse & I have been given a gift from THE ALMIGHTY… Stay blessed always, the entire Oakville team, BRAVO.”

So sweet, right? Our team felt like superheroes armed with Swiffers.

From Blessed to Stressed

Fast-forward to the second free cleaning. Everything went smoothly, well, at first. He even left another glowing review:

“Very satisfied in every respect. Stay blessed always.”

An hour later, things took a sharp turn.

Suddenly, we were receiving angry messages… dozens of them. The tone switched from “God bless you” to “Is this how you treat terminal cancer patients???” He accused our cleaner of doing an awful job and then, a few hours later, of stealing perfume.

We responded with grace (and caffeine). Our manager Valentina offered a free re-clean to make it right, even though we’d already done both free cleanings.

And just like that — poof! — the theft accusation vanished. He apologized.

Even the Cleaning for a Reason manager noted, “His attitude changed completely, as if it were two different people typing.”

We were starting to agree.

The Witching Hour

You’d think that was the end. You’d be wrong.

A few weeks later, we offered a third courtesy clean, hoping to bring peace, harmony, and maybe some lemon-scented calm. Enters Annete, one of our best cleaners. She’s detailed and absolutely not magical (as far as HR knows). Within 30 minutes, Annete texted her supervisor, Val

“I’m being over-supervised… I think the wife is giving me instructions every minute.”

Val, ever the diplomat, reminded her that the clients had been through a lot and maybe didn’t realize how intense they were being. But soon after, Annete messaged again:

“I don’t think I can work under these conditions.”

Val called the customer to smooth things over. The cleaning wrapped up, and for a moment, everything seemed calm.

The Dryer Mat Drama

That night, the client texted:

“The maid didn’t say goodbye and threw away our bags!”

Then, on Monday:

“She destroyed our kitchen paper holder and drying mat!”

We weren’t guilty of what they were accusing us, though in the spirit of settling on a somewhat positive terms, we apologized (again) and even replaced the items out of our own pocket. You’d think that would settle it, right?

At 11 PM that night… ding.
Another text.
Then another.
Then 30 more.

This time, the accusation took a supernatural turn.

“Your maid did witchcraft on me and my family.”

Yes, you read that correctly. Witchcraft. Not “missed a spot,” not “left streaks on the mirror.”
Actual witchcraft.

Notifications like this rolled in all night like a horror movie. By morning, we were still receiving texts, and we had to contact his social worker to de-escalate the situation.

Moral of the Story

Be kind to your cleaners. They’re there to help, not to hex.

If your home feels “spiritually lighter,” that’s just good cleaning service, not witchcraft.

And when in doubt, remember: sometimes saying “no more courtesy cleans” is self-care for your staff and your sanity.

Because here at Oakville Maids, we don’t use potions… only polish.
